The North Carolina Symphony was formed in 1932 under the direction of Pulitzer Traveling Fellow Lamar Stringfield. The Symphony was a Works Progress Administration project in the 1930s; in the 1940s, it was the first orchestra to receive state funding on a continuous basis. Benjamin Swalin and Maxine Swalin led the Symphony from 1939 to 1972. Adeline Denham McCall (1900-1989) of Chapel Hill, N.C., was a teacher of music and music appreciation. She taught music education and music history at Duke University and served as music supervisor of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools for 30 years. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill she taught music for students interested in early childhood education.
